Umbraco Migrations and Upgrades Made Simple

Whether you're upgrading to the latest version or migrating to Umbraco from another platform...

Upgrade Umbraco

What is an Umbraco migration and when do you need one?

An Umbraco migration is the process of moving a website to Umbraco CMS from another platform (WordPress, Sitecore, Drupal, or custom-built systems), or upgrading an existing Umbraco site from an older version to a current Long Term Support (LTS) release. Migrations are necessary when your current platform reaches end-of-life, when security vulnerabilities can no longer be patched, or when the cost of maintaining legacy code exceeds the cost of rebuilding.

According to Umbraco's official lifecycle policy, Umbraco 8 reached end of extended support in February 2025. Umbraco 10 LTS support ends in June 2025, Umbraco 13 LTS support ends in December 2026. Sites running unsupported versions no longer receive security patches, which creates compliance and liability risks. particularly for organisations handling personal data under UK GDPR.

Simon Antony Limited has completed Umbraco migrations across every major version from v4 through v17. We've migrated sites from WordPress, Classic ASP, Sitecore, and bespoke .NET Framework applications, each with different technical challenges and data migration requirements.

What does an Umbraco migration involve?

Content migration

Extracting content from the source CMS and mapping it to Umbraco document types. This includes page content, media files, metadata, URL structures, and internal links. We write custom import scripts rather than relying on manual copy-paste, which ensures accuracy and allows rollback.

Template and design migration

Converting existing designs from the source platform's template language (PHP/Twig for WordPress, XSLT for older Umbraco, JSP for Sitecore) to Umbraco's Razor/C# view engine.

Custom functionality

Rebuilding platform-specific features (search, forms, API integrations, authentication) using Umbraco's native patterns and ASP.NET Core middleware.

URL preservation

Implementing 301 redirects for every page to preserve search engine equity. A failed redirect strategy can cost months of organic traffic.

Testing and cutover

Parallel running on a staging environment, followed by a planned switchover with DNS cutover during low-traffic hours.

Which platforms do you migrate to Umbraco?

We've completed migrations from all major CMS platforms to Umbraco:

WordPress to Umbraco — The most common migration path. WordPress sites that have outgrown their plugin-dependent architecture benefit from Umbraco's custom-coded flexibility. We export WordPress content via WP-CLI, map custom post types to Umbraco document types, and rebuild theme functionality in Razor. Typical timeline: 6-10 weeks for a 50-100 page site.

Sitecore to Umbraco — For organisations that want enterprise CMS capability without Sitecore's licensing costs (which can exceed GBP 40,000 per year according to industry benchmarks). We map Sitecore templates and sublayouts to Umbraco document types and partial views.

Classic ASP / legacy .NET to Umbraco — The most technically complex migration path. We've migrated 15+ year old Classic ASP applications with SQL Server backends to modern Umbraco on .NET Core, preserving business logic and data integrity throughout.

Frequently asked questions about Umbraco migrations

Get answers to some of the most common questions about our services, expertise, and how we can help with your Umbraco migration projects.

Timelines vary based on site complexity. A simple brochure site (10-30 pages, no custom functionality) typically takes 4-6 weeks. A mid-complexity site with custom features, API integrations, and 50-200 pages takes 8-12 weeks. Enterprise migrations with multiple sites, complex data models, and authentication systems can take 16-24 weeks. We provide a detailed timeline during the discovery phase.

Not if the migration is done properly. The critical factor is 301 redirect implementation, every old URL must redirect to its new equivalent. We generate a complete URL map before migration begins and verify every redirect after cutover. We also submit the updated sitemap to Google Search Console immediately after launch and monitor indexing for 30 days.

Simple brochure site migrations start from around GBP 3,000-5,000. Mid-complexity migrations with custom functionality range from GBP 8,000-20,000. Enterprise migrations with multiple integrations and data complexity can exceed GBP 30,000. We provide fixed-price quotes after a discovery call, no surprises.

Yes. This is our most common migration type. Umbraco 8 runs on .NET Framework while Umbraco 13+ runs on .NET Core, it's effectively a platform change, not just a version upgrade. We rebuild the template layer, migrate content via the Umbraco Deploy API or custom scripts, and update all custom code from .NET Framework to .NET 8/9. Our blog post on Umbraco migrations covers the technical details in depth.
